Players reported technical issues almost instantly, including being unable to log in and find opponents through matchmaking, which eventually prompted Capcom to extend the beta for an undetermined amount of time. Unfortunately, the efforts were in vain, as the company just announced that it is postponing the Street Fighter 5 beta “until a later time.”
Over on Capcom-Unity, Capcom’s own ComboFiend revealed the postponement in a post, saying “Capcom offers its sincerest apologies to everyone who participated.”
“We will be postponing our first beta phase until we believe the experience is going to be a positive one for players.”
Many who managed to gain access to the beta are sure to be disappointed by the news, but it’s certainly better to go through this now than with the full game. Furthermore, this won’t impact the amount of beta tests Capcom already had planned for the upcoming fighting game. At least three other tests will take place before Street Fighter 5 launches, meaning there will be plenty of other opportunities to play the game early. Although, people may be more wary of them after the way the first one played out.
There’s no telling when the first beta will return, but Capcom is working on “a worthwhile in-game incentive” for everyone that was affected, including any European and Asian players, since the beta was initially limited to North America over the weekend. It’s a small comfort, to be sure, and one that probably won’t satisfy anyone once it’s unveiled, but the alternative is no one gets any recognition for being a part of the beta test - which some fans could take issue with following the numerous amount of problems.
How do you feel about the first ever Street Fighter 5 beta? Are you more concerned about future tests based on this beta’s performance or the way the full game will handle cross-platform play?
Street Fighter 5 doesn’t have a definitive release date yet, but is expected to release in March 2016 for the PlayStation 4 and PC.
