Aside from his many critically acclaimed roles in Oscar winners such as No Country for Old Men, Sicario, and Dune, perhaps a couple of Brolin’s most popular ones in recent years stem from the Marvel universe, where the actor gained much praise for his now-iconic role as the mad titan Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as Cable in Deadpool 2. Now, Brolin has opened about losing the role of Batman.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Brolin recalled how he was once in the running to be cast as the caped crusader in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a role that ultimately piqued his interest when finding out it would involve a certain level of risk. “That was interesting to me,” Brolin said. “Again, because something that is set up to not work at all, or to work flyingly — I like those odds. I like playing with those odds. I’m like, ‘Am I the guy who’s gonna make it all fail?’”

“I didn’t think [he] was bad, but you talk to Clooney and he’s still talking about it – and it wasn’t his fault,” Brolin continued, of course referring to George Clooney’s infamous take on the comic book character in 1997’s Batman & Robin. “That was before Deadpool 2,” Brolin said of Snyder’s film. “…it would have been the older, more raspy [version] for lack of a better word… Honestly, that would have been a fun deal, and maybe I’ll do it when I’m 80.”

Snyder eventually landed on Ben Affleck to don the cape and cowl, and the actor would eventually go on to star in multiple DCEU projects before making his final appearance as Batman in the upcoming The Flash. Of course, the most recent take on the Dark Knight is Robert Pattinson’s in The Batman, as the Matt Reeves-directed film serves as a solo outing for the character in its own separate universe unlike Affleck’s version in the DCEU.

The Batman is now available on HBO Max.
